Every beach goer has their favorite beach. We do, too. In the months ahead we will share with you some of our favorite places. Some places are quite well known and some places you may never have known existed. We will also be giving you the latest scoop on top surfers, be it local boys like the Bryan Bothers or internationally famous surfers like Darrick Doerner or Titus Nihi Kinimaka. To enhance your beach experience, you may want to check out Costa Azul. The have everything from board rentals to clothing. They even give surfing lessons! Are you into "skimming" the waves? Want to try? Check out Lagunitian Skimboards. They make some of the finest skimboards you that you can find. Maybe all you want to do is stroll along the sidewalk and check out the shops. One of our favorite places to go is Fawn Memories. My wife and I have been collecting items from this store for decades! (oops, I'm giving away my age). If you haven't been there before you've got to check it out. They are located right on Forest Avenue in downtown Laguna (you get a free key ring or something if you mention the Word). Another fun place that we just discovered is Tung and Groov. What a fun place! You have got to visit it if for no other reason that to tell your friends what you saw. And if you are in to antiques, you may want to stop by Treasures-N-'Tiques as well. You'll find a lot of fine furnishings there. If you get off to an early start, you may want to swing by the Orange Inn. What a history they have (since 1931)! The first time you stop by you may notice that everyone seems to know everyone else. If you keep coming back you'll soon be part of the "Inn" crowd (pardon the pun). If you have the time, you may like to have breakfast at the Cottage. That's another Laguna landmark that seems to have been there forever. It was also a favorite place for cartoonist Virgil Partch and Phil Interlandi for years (oh, did I give away my age again). I had the good fortune to interview Virgil and Phil (when I was a baby). I told them I wanted to be a cartoonist - they said, "Don't do it. Finish kindergarten first." Speaking of Laguna icons, you've driven by The Pottery Shack hundreds of times but have you ever been in it? If not, do yourself a favor and drop by. You will find so many wonderful pieces of pottery and discover that you have finally found the perfect pot for your home or garden. If you find yourself down by Salt Creek and need a good sandwich, swing by the Monarch Beach Market & Deli. They have an excellent wine selection as well. "Life's a Beach" and it will be even more fun when you learn all the interesting things to see and do. We'll give you "The Word." |
