The Bothers Bryan

Bill Bryan The first time that I met Bill and George was in 1979 when I had come home from Hawaii for the summer.  The boys couldn't have been more than four feet tall and were sporting a couple of the finest big hair a'fros that I had seen that year.

Their mother, Barbara had been dating a very good friend of mine, Ray who had stayed and surfed with us on the North Shore.

What impressed me about these two little grommets at Victoria Beach, was their total lack of fear and go for it attitude.  Their early exploits were incredible.  These guy's would bomb down the hill to the beach on their little Big Wheel trikes, over and over to the delight and entertainment of the whole beach.  Needless to say the wipeouts were legendary.  Well, these two little grommets of yesterday are today's World Champion skimboarders.  It was a natural progression from the Big Wheel to the skimboard at Victoria beach.  Now they have and will continue to progress.  Much to our delight, I'm sure that they will continue to entertain and amaze us for years to come.

George BryanI had lunch at the Coyote Grill with the brothers Bryan and grilled them on what's going on.  Bill and George are respectively the #1 and #2 official World Skimboarding Champions.  Their company, 10th Street Bros, has been producing yearly skim videos for the past 10 years.  Their newest video "Liquid Courage," was just released four weeks ago.  Also available is their line of hats and tees, scheduled to hit the shelves soon.

Bill is back on board, the "Wave Loch," a standing wave.  Another median that proves he's champion with a new permanent machine at Belmont Park in San Diego.  He will be teaching as well as doing demos and contests.  And watch out for the rumored night parties!  George, who just returned from Chile with nothing but raves for the country, "beaches, food and culture" obviously has his plate full with the company.  He is now working on a new tech project with his sponsor Exile, as well as Skim On-line.

DK:  Where are your favorite skim spots and why?
B & G:  #1-The Wedge, this is where we "test the limits," #2-Cabo San Lucas.  No kook's, clean water, good living and #3-front of house (So. Lag.).

As for their families, Bill and his girl Quinn have two beautiful children, Koby age 3 and Brooklyn 2 mo.  George, who say's he wants nothing more than to raise a family, says he has found that person with his girl Elizabeth.

DK:  Why Skimboarding?
Bill:  One of the best things about skimming is being able to stand next to the cooler in the shade of an umbrella until the next good wave comes along.
George:  Risking your life for no reason other than your buddies praise.
B & G:  First it would have to be the characters involved.  There's no "rounding of the edges" everyone can remain themselves.  There's no homogenizing as there is in so many other sports.  Also, it's the fact that everyone is truly happy to share and be with each other.

The guy's want to pass along the torch to the next generation as their mentor Chris "Hendie" Henderson did for them.  Their motto is one that Hendie taught them and one that they always pass along," Sometimes you have to give up a truly excellent wave to the less fortunate."  In closing I asked them who they would like to mention:
Thanks mom, Thanks Hendie, Thanks Laguna.  We also need to plug their sponsors who allow them to live to skim and not only "test the limits" but allow them to set new ones.

Bill:  Laguna Surf and Sport, Boost Mobile, Lost, and Victoria Skimboards
George:  Volcom, X-Trak, South Laguna Skate and Surf, F.A.B., and Exile Skimboards.

I would just like to say Thanks guys for all these years of amazing performances.  We cant wait to see the next act.
