Lagunitian Skimboards
Going to his uncles auto shop, JRP company, he was invited to build a board out of the high tech composite materials that they were using to build the Top Fuel and Formula One race cars out of. Using the scraps from the floor Ivan built boards with carbon fiber, honeycomb, and epoxy. Working with an autoclave, he developed a process that creates the finished product in one step.
Now that the demand is increasing, current orders from Japan, France, and Portugal are coming in. The shop is tooling up for higher output, yet vows to maintain its principal of uniqueness that makes every Lagunitian skimboard an individual work of art. Lagunitian Skimboards were created out of the economic reality that new boards are expensive. Ivan Ashauer and his friends went under his house in Lagunita and started making their own Skimboards out of the materials they could find at the hardware store. They made functional designs that worked, and then demand for the boards grew to the point that in 1987 Ivan started Lagunitian.
This is the difference between Lagunitian and the other skimboard manufacturers. Every board is an individual work of art. The Lagunitian Skimboard process basically burns the art work directly into the cloth, which makes each board unique and truly custom. Lagunitian is the anti-production skimboard producer. The shop currently outputs an average of six boards per day.
